Services & Activities

TACMEP can give you information on basic skills courses that are provided by local institutions and help on CV writing, job search and filling in applications forms.

English Classes

We are currently running weekly English classes. The classes are aimed at those who find it hard to access Adult Education classes or need help to get the confidence to go on to such courses in the future.

Each student takes an assessment test at the beginning of the course to find out their level of English. The course lasts for 20 weeks and there is an exit test based on what has been studied in the lessons. A certificate is given to each student at the end of the course, which states how many lessons have been attended.

On Thursday we run a class from 10.00am until noon. It is aimed at beginners. You will work with a teacher on provided material to be checked with the class teacher at the end of the lesson. This class is currently full, but potential students are welcome to join a waiting list or attend the Friday class.

On Friday we run a class from 11.00am until 1.00pm. This class is held at St Botolphs's Church Hall in Colchester. The class is run by a group of volunteer teachers. Students of all abilities are welcome to attend.

Pathway to Employment

This project assists unemployed or economically inactive BME adults, who are lawfully resident in the UK and have lived here for the past three years, to move closer to employment.

Rachel Walton works three days per week as a Community Project Worker for this project. Rachel works with clients on a one-to-one basis to deliver structured employability sessions which are targeted to the needs of each individual. Each client receives a minimum of 9 hours guided learning, beginning with the development of an individual learning plan. They then work through the activities in their learning plan, which could include confidence building, identifying their skills, producing a CV, developing job search techniques, completing applications and developing job interview skills.

Pathway to Employment is funded by TCHC Community Grants and co-financed by Skills Funding Agency and European Social Fund. The project will currently run until 31st May 2012. For further details, please log on to http://www.tchc.net/services/community-grants/

Casework

Liming Cui is our Caseworker and she works on Thursdays and Fridays. Her role involves providing information and assistance to BME individuals who require support with issues of access, communication and equality, for example, if they have suffered discrimination or they need help to find housing. Her work involves interviewing clients to identify problems, determining assistance needed, referring to appropriate agencies, basic advocacy and performing follow-up contacts as necessary.

Multi-cultural Mums Group

Are you interested in meeting other BME families?

This group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the William Loveless Hall, Wivenhoe from 10a.m until 12 noon. The aim is to bring together mums and young children from different ethnic groups to offer support and share ideas and experiences.

The group provides a safe place for women of black and minority ethnic backgrounds to meet, to learn new skills such as; relaxation, networking, confidence building, art and crafts, meeting people from different backgrounds, trips and outings.

This is your space to develop any activities or event you would like to see happen!

Children are welcome as they can benefit from input from various adults that helps with their self esteem and well being. Activities are planned for children.

Diverse Minds, Healthy Bodies

Diverse Minds, Healthy Bodies was a partnership project between TACMEP, Colchester MIND and North East Essex Primary Care Trust (PCT). The purpose of the project was to increase the access of BME groups to primary care health services, including mental health services, and reduce health inequalities experienced by those communities. These outcomes were achieved by supporting early prevention and access to primary care services and providing a programme of activities which contributed to the prevention of ill-health (mental and physical) and improved life expectancy.

This pioneering project has recently drawn to a close after running for three years and was nominated for a 'Best Practise in Equalities' Award from CSIP (Care Services Improvement Partnership for the Eastern Region). We are developing new strategies to continue to implement the activities of this successful project.

As part of the Diverse Minds, Healthy Bodies project, nine BME 'Health Champions' were trained to deliver health advice and information to their host communities, providing a link between them and local primary health services.
