Housing in Colchester & Tendring

We have had several consultations and focus group meetings to establish the issues relating to housing among black and minority ethnic groups.

It has been highlighted that there are a large number of black and minority ethnic groups who live in inadequate social housing and the services provided by the local authorities have been disappointing.

Overcrowding is quite common in some Asian families, as they prefer to live in extended families. The waiting list for accommodation this size is quite long as there are limited large houses. In these circumstances private renting would be the only other option.

Poor housing and homelessness is one of the worst effects of social exclusion and ill-health.

With this in mind we will give guidance and support to our target groups on housing issues including:

  • Liaising with the Council

  • Help with filling in application forms

  • Information on Sheltered housing

  • Help and advice on Housing and Council benefits

  • Homelessness

  • Overcrowding

  • Poor conditions and repairs

  • Sheltered housing schemes

  • Housing Associations

  • Improvement grants

We are constantly working with local authorities to improve standards and services to meet the needs of the Ethnic Minorities in Tendring and Colchester.

TACMEP has also dealt with sensitive cases where women were fleeing domestic violence and needed refuge.

We have assisted many individuals and families to be re-housed in suitable accommodation.

TACMEP is a member of Essex Black and Minority Ethnic Citizens Panel which is managed by Essex Housing Officers Group (EHOG) who are a group of housing officers from local housing authorities and registered social landlords in Essex. The groups meet to discuss and agree Essex housing issues.
